New Medication Service

The New Medication Service (NMS) is a free NHS initiative designed to provide extra support for people who have been prescribed a new medication for a long-term condition. The primary goal of NMS is to help you understand your new medication, ensure you take it correctly, and address any concerns or side effects you might experience. By offering this service, Pan Pharmacy aims to improve medication adherence, enhance treatment outcomes, and reduce the likelihood of hospital admissions.

Who Can Benefit from NMS?

NMS is available to patients who have been prescribed a new medication for one of the following conditions:

  • – Asthma and COPD
  • – Diabetes (Type 2)
  • – Hypertension
  • – Hypercholesterolaemia
  • – Osteoporosis
  • – Gout
  • – Glaucoma
  • – Epilepsy
  • – Parkinson’s disease
  • – Urinary incontinence/retention
  • – Heart failure
  • – Acute coronary syndromes
  • – Atrial fibrillation
  • – Long-term risks of venous thromboembolism/embolism
  • – Stroke/transient ischemic attack
  • – Coronary heart disease

If you fall into any of these categories and have been prescribed a new medication, you are eligible to participate in the NMS at Pan Pharmacy.

The Importance of the New Medication Service

Starting a new medication can be daunting, especially when dealing with long-term conditions. Many patients have questions about how their new medication works, how to take it correctly, and what side effects they might experience. The NMS is designed to provide you with the support and information you need during this critical period.

Improving Medication Adherence

One of the primary goals of NMS is to improve medication adherence. Research shows that patients who receive additional support and information about their medications are more likely to take them as prescribed. This leads to better health outcomes and reduces the risk of complications and hospitalisations.

Enhancing Treatment Outcomes

By ensuring that you understand your new medication and take it correctly, the NMS can enhance the effectiveness of your treatment. Proper medication management is essential for controlling chronic conditions and preventing disease progression.

Addressing Concerns and Side Effects

The NMS provides a platform for you to discuss any concerns or side effects you might experience with your new medication. Our pharmacists are trained to address these issues, provide reassurance, and suggest solutions to minimise side effects and improve your comfort.

How the New Medication Service Works

The NMS is a structured service that involves three key stages: an initial consultation, a follow-up consultation, and a final consultation. Here’s how it works:

1. Initial Consultation

When you receive your new medication at Pan Pharmacy, our pharmacist will invite you to participate in the NMS. During the initial consultation, which can take place in person or over the phone, the pharmacist will:

  • – Explain how your new medication works
  • – Discuss how to take it correctly
  • – Provide information on potential side effects and how to manage them
  • – Answer any questions or concerns you might have

This consultation is designed to give you a thorough understanding of your new medication and ensure you feel confident about taking it.

2. Follow-Up Consultation

Seven to fourteen days after the initial consultation, our pharmacist will arrange a follow-up consultation. This can also be conducted in person or over the phone. During this session, the pharmacist will:

  • – Check how you are getting on with your new medication
  • – Address any issues or concerns you might have encountered
  • – Assess whether you are experiencing any side effects and suggest ways to manage them
  • – Provide additional information or support if needed

The follow-up consultation is crucial for identifying and addressing any early issues with your new medication, ensuring you stay on track with your treatment.

3. Final Consultation

Twenty-one to twenty-eight days after the initial consultation, a final consultation will be arranged. This session aims to:

  • – Review your experience with the new medication
  • – Confirm that you are taking it correctly and effectively
  • – Resolve any remaining issues or concerns
  • – Reinforce the importance of ongoing adherence to your medication regimen

The final consultation ensures that you have successfully integrated the new medication into your routine and are confident in managing your condition.
